One of the many instances, where youll find Hult students championing for business to transform lives is the Hult Prize. Referred to as the Nobel Prize for students, the Hult Prize challenges students to find new and disruptive solutions to tackle some of the biggest social issues around the globe. The Hult Prize has seen a rise of undergraduate teams taking part in the competition and despite competing against Masters, MBA,  and Executive-MBA teams, theyve shown they can bring the heat. Team ENPOV personifies  just that. Hanny Semere, Patricio Gerpe, Ikram Zakir, and Cusmaan  Dahir are students from the Hult Undergraduate London campus. Over the last six months, they have worked tirelessly to build their million-dollar business model, traveled  twice to  Ethiopia, and are now the first Hult Undergraduate team to make it through to the Hult Prize Regional Finals. All whilst studying for their Bachelor of Business Administration degree! We spoke with Hanny to learn about her experience competing with Team ENPOV in the Hult Prize. Congratulations on making it through to the Hult Prize Regionals! How does it feel to be the first ever Hult  undergraduate team to make it this far? Hanny: Honestly, its been amazing! Its shown everyone it doesnt matter if youre an MBA or undergraduate student, its about who has the commitment, the idea, and how you package it together. The level of support weve received from the entire community has been incredible. And not just from Hult undergrads. The entire school has been great at helping us–from rounds of faculty and staff feedback to even fellow students offering their time to help with crowdfunding. The Regional Finals are three weeks away and the best universities in the world will be there. As the first Hult undergraduate team to make it there, the pressure is on. And on top of that, we still have mid-terms! But all of this is motivating us to work even harder. Talk us through what motivated you to take part in the Hult Prize? Hanny: After I completed high school in Dubai, I came to Hult because of its real-world application and practical learning environment. I spent my first year  in London settling in and connecting with everyone. But this year I decided I wanted to take full advantage of what both the Hult community and platform has to offer. Im originally from Ethiopia and grew up seeing vast poverty every day. When I discovered the Hult Prize, I was excited by the joining of business and societal needs and how you could make both impact and profit. It was then when I said yes, this is the competition for me! How did you form your team?   Hanny: At the start, I really didnt know where to look for my team. I wanted to step outside of my friendship circle and take the opportunity to work with other students, who would be super passionate. On our Hult Facebook page, Patricio posted he was looking for like-minded students to form a dedicated team. From there Patricio and I met up and were joined by Ikram and Cusmaan. Before kicking off anything, we all sat down and discussed why we each wanted to do this. After that conversation, it was clear everyone was in this for the same reason–to engage in business and do social good. Students at Hult come from such different cultures, experiences it brings so much value to the table. And the diversity aspect really shows when we work on projects–like the Hult Prize. The more you work with people from diverse backgrounds, the more you learn, the more you can deliver. How did you develop a solution to transform the lives of 10million people by 2025? Hanny: We came into this with high ambitions. We got together regularly to collect research in hackathon-style sessions! Two of us on the team are from Ethiopia, and we flirted with the idea of going out there for field research. The idea became more attractive as we realized how much value the visit would bring. So we went for it. The only thing we needed to solve was funding. We began reaching out to our network to look for potential sponsors and Patricio created a corporate social responsibility pitch to show how covering the cost of this organization was a good investment for the organizations we approached. Since we had school commitments we literally couldnt waste any time. Once we secured the funding for the trip and the next day we flew into Addis Ababa. Our time in Ethiopia was invaluable! We went into full networking mode and knocked on the doors of everyone relevant–from businesses to government officials. From our ground level research, our business model evolved significantly. In the agricultural sector, a key market in Ethiopia, we found rural isolation to be a major barrier to economic and social development. Ikram had an incredible network in Ethiopia and spoke the regional dialects. This helped us meet local business people and one in particular from Sudan. Our conversations led to us designing a hybrid electric tricycle and contracting our Sudanese contact to build a prototype for us.   What advice do you have the class of 2019, who are thinking about competing in the Hult Prize? You just have to go for it! Im so grateful for the opportunity this competition has created and for bringing us together and providing the opportunity to cultivate our idea. The Freedom Charter Called for Equality in South Africa

The Freedom Charter was a document ratified at the Congress of the People held at Kliptown, Soweto, South Africa in June 1955 by the various member bodies of the  Congress Alliance. The policies set out in the Charter included a demand for a multi-racial, democratically elected government, equal opportunities, the nationalization of banks, mines, and heavy industries, and a redistribution of land. Africanist members of the ANC rejected the Freedom Charter and broke away to form the Pan Africanist Congress. In 1956, following extensive searches of various homes and confiscation of documents, 156 people involved in the creation and ratification of the Freedom Charter were arrested for treason.  This was almost the entire executive of the African National Congress (ANC), Congress of Democrats, South African Indian Congress, Coloured Peoples Congress, and the South African Congress of Trade Unions (collectively known as the Congress Alliance). They were charged with high treason and a countrywide conspiracy to use violence to overthrow the present government and replace it with a communist state. The punishment for high treason was death. The Freedom Charter and Clauses We, the People of South Africa, declare for all our country and the world to know that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people. -The Freedom Charter Here is a synopsis of each of the clauses, which list various rights and stances in detail. The Treason Trial At the treason trial in August, 1958, the prosecution attempted to show that the Freedom Charter was a Communist tract and that the only way it could be achieved was by overthrowing the present government.  However, the Crowns expert witness on Communism admitted that the Charter was a humanitarian document that might well represent the natural reaction and aspirations of non-whites to the harsh conditions in South Africa. The main piece of evidence against the accused was a recording of a speech made by Robert Resha, the  Trasvaal  Volunteer-in-Chief, which appeared to say that volunteers should be violent when called upon to use violence. During the  defense,  it was shown that Reshas viewpoints were the exception rather than the rule in the  ANC and that the short quote had been taken completely out of context. The Outcome of the Treason Trial Within a week of the trail starting, one of the two charges under the Suppression of Communism Act was dropped. Two months later the Crown announced that the whole indictment was being dropped, only to issue  a new  indictment against 30 people—all members of the ANC. Chief Albert Luthuli and Oliver Tambo were released for lack of evidence. Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu (ANC secretary-general) were among the final 30 accused. On March 29, 1961, Justice FL Rumpff interrupted the defense summation with a verdict. He announced that although the ANC was working to replace the government and had used illegal means of protest during the Defiance Campaign, the Crown had failed to show that the ANC was using violence to overthrow the government, and  were therefore  not guilty  of treason. The Crown had failed to establish any revolutionary intent behind the defendants actions. Having been found non-guilty, the remaining 30 accused were discharged. The Ramifications of the Treason Trial The Treason Trial was a serious blow to the ANC and the other members of the Congress Alliance. Their leadership was imprisoned or banned and considerable costs were incurred. Most significantly, the more radical members of the ANCs Youth League rebelled against the ANC interaction with other  races  and left to form the PAC. Nelson Mandela, Walter  Sisulu,  and six others were eventually given a life sentence for treason in 1964 at what is known as the Rivonia Trial.

Don Quixote Madman or Idealist? In my judgement, Don Quixote is and idealist. He lives in a time of Machiavellian beliefs and wants to escape these characteristics. He fantasizes about the way things used to be in the times of the knights, and the code of Chivalry, and wishes that he too could live in this time period. Some may argue that he was a madman due to his attack on the windmills, but he just seems to suffer from a slight mental illness, which does not in turn qualify him as a madman. Don Quixada is a man of about fifty years old; he was born of nobility and therefore, could not get a job after his wealth was spent. At this age it did not seem that he had much of a future, the majority of his life was in the past, but he wanted to do something about this and somehow change the destiny of his future. He had a great interest in medieval times; he spent a lot of time reading about the knights and codes of chivalry. He wanted himself to be a noble knight, to ride out on his horse with his trusty sidekick and to be a hero. So he decided, being the idealist he was, that he could accomplish these things even though he now lived in the Renaissance time. Idealists dream, and then turn their dreams into a reality, which is what Don Quixada did when he transformed himself into Don Quixote. He knew the things he needed to make his dream come true. He needed a horse, a trusty sidekick, and a woman to love. He attained all these items, but they were not quite up to par. He renamed everyone on his journey, to make them all seem a little more dream worthy. His horse was renamed Rozinante, the name spruced up the old dilapidated horse. His sidekick, Sancho Panza, was merely after wealth and land in this journey, and was attempting to desert his wife and children. His love interest, Aldunza renamed Dolcinea, was not your typical high class sophisticated woman, she was a rough country girl. It took a great deal of imagination on Don Quixote's part to turn these aspects into his fantasy. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza set out on their adventure very late one night, so that no one would notice them leaving. The next day they arrived at a point where they could see thirty or forty windmills. Don Quixote imagined them as being giants, and attacked them. He did this out pure wit and excitement, not out of lunacy and derangement. He all along knew that they were not really giants, but thought that it would be fun to be in some sort of battle. In my opinion, Don Quixote is an idealist, not a madman. He simply dreams of a different life for himself, rather than facing his fate that is thus far set out for him. Being an idealist, he turns his dream into a reality, suits up in his armor and heads out on his horse into the sunset.
