Written in 19th century England, the work, told mostly through main character Elizabeth Bennet’s point of view, tells the story of a family of five daughters and their mother’s desperate attempts to marry each of her daughters to wealthy men. The women of this novel serve as most of the important characters, each have their own independent role. Analyzing this novel through the feminist lens will reveal how a female author affects the plot of the work and how the development of each character represents how women were view in this society and contributes to the novel being a feminist work. Before employing the feminist lens, it is necessary to define it and explain how it is related to Pride and Prejudice. Deborah Appleman describes the feminist lens as, â€Å"how the characters, especially the female characters, are portrayed and †¦ how the portrayal of female characters â€Å"reinforces or undermines† sexual stereotypes†¦ and how the gender of the author affects how literature was written† (Appleman 12). The feminist criticism asks the question: â€Å"Is the work a feminist work?† The setting of Pride and Prejudice is a time when the main objective of a woman was to find a wealthy husband. Even in the novel’s exposition, the perceived inferiority is demonstrated through the inheritance of Mr. Bennet’s estate.
